The deadline to submit objections to the Environment Agency has passed, however the EA is also still happy to accept any further information which may affect its decision on whether they will issue two permits. One is for the incinerator that will burn 270 000 tonnes of waste, the second is a separate permit for the 970 000 tonne landfill at New England Quarry.

This website was created by Ivybridge residents to raise awareness about Viridor's plan to build a 'Resource Recovery Centre' at New England Quarry, less than two miles from the beautiful town of Ivybridge which is situated on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in South Hams Devon. The campaign has led to a new found community spirit in the town and this site is now growing into a hub of communication for Ivybridge residents for the promotion of all positive social and environmental activities and good causes in the area. This site is being continuously updated, so please keep checking back for the latest information.

Mission statement

We the Ivybridge residents believe we should be fully consulted regarding any matter that may adversely affect our environment or our economy. This includes the quality of the air that we breathe, the amount of traffic on our roads and the price of our houses. We love Ivybridge and will do what we can to ensure that Ivybridge continues to be a beautiful, safe and desirable place to live both now and in the future.

Please get involved!

What we do with our waste and and how we treat our environment could affect all of our futures - we need to get together to make sure that the future is the best it can be for us and for our children. Please register on the left menu for email updates and use the Contact Us form to get in touch and offer your help with the campaign.

The Incinerator Facts
  • EfW (Energy from Waste) is the new term used for the word 'incinerator'.
  • The proposed site is just south of the A38 Lee Mill exit (the Tesco junction).
  • The facility would process 275,000 tonnes of waste each year.
  • Incinerators produce ash. Fly ash is what goes up a chimney, which is filtered out. It is highly toxic and would be transported to a hazardous waste landfill in Cheltenham.
  • Bottom ash is what comes out the bottom of an incinerator, not as toxic as fly ash, but still high in metals which pose a health risk.
  • The disposal of ash is a problem for incinerators everywhere.
  • Viridor's proposal is to convert the bottom ash into 62,500 tonnes of aggregates for the local construction market.
  • Aggregate from ash is hard to sell due to health concerns. Unsold bottom ash would go into the landfill next to the river.
  • Viridor has stated that there would be up to 150 lorry deliveries a day.
  • Lorry movements would be between the hours of 8am - 6pm Monday to Saturday (including bank holidays) and 8am to 4pm Sundays.
  • The incinerator would operate continuously around the clock.
