In your recent reply discussing alternatives to incineration, you say that
‘Compared to conventional landfilling, the EfW plant will result in significantly lower methane emissions.’

A lot of claims are made to try and sell incinerators as a green technology, and yet Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, who would be quick to recommend a new technology should it be beneficial to our planet, have been very clear in opposing incineration as a solution to combat the increasingly urgent crisis of global warming.

I have read many counter claims against your arguments, but I think it is important that we first establish the facts in this instance before we debate your claim that incineration is better than landfill (even though I have not yet heard anyone suggest that we continue to landfill our rubbish as an alternative to incineration).

Please can you first tell us the following:

- exactly how much methane gas would be produced by this proposed incinerator per annum?
- exactly how much CO2 would be produced by this proposed incinerator per annum?
- exactly how much electricity would be generated by this proposed incinerator per annum?

Also please could you give us the reference details of the research on which you base the claim that ‘Compared to conventional landfilling, the EfW plant will result in significantly lower methane emissions.’

Many thanks!
Frankie

We acknowledge that a lot of claims have been made regarding “green” technology by environmental action groups and others. We are proposing a safe, robust and efficient technology. In answer to your specific queries:

- No methane gas will be produced
- Details of CO2 emissions are being investigated in full and will be provided in the independently conducted Environment Impact Assessment and/or the Environmental Permit Application to the Environment Agency. This will be made available with the final planning application when completed
- 20MW of electricity will be supplied to the National Grid by the proposed facility. This is enough to power around 34,700 homes.

In response to your question about sources, information about emissions and output is provided by independent assessments such as the Environmental Impact Assessment and/ or the Environmental Permit Application. These documents will be submitted with the planning application and will be made publicly available after submission.

You say details of CO2 will be provided 'Environment Impact Assessment and/or the Environmental Permit Application to the Environment Agency'. Please could you clarify in which environmental study you will be including details of C02. I would hope that this information is provided at the time of the planning application, not left until the environmental permit application.

Everyone knows that once you have the planning permission we won't be able to stop you building your incinerator - yes the environment agency may well place restrictions, but we all know that they are very unlikely to stop you going ahead with your plans should planning permission be granted.

So please can you clarify whether details of the C02 emissions will be provided with your planning application? You have put forward a case to the council that incineration is greener than landfill, but without details of the C02 emissions I do not know how you can possibly make such a claim. I imagine that C02 emissions are going to be the biggest challenge for future councils, increasingly so year on year.

So please clarify exactly when you will be providing this vital information. Thanks!
