Where exactly is the landfill going to be? That area on the Viridor brochure next to the river?

If so - how many salmon will die in the River as the toxins in the rain will be washed into the river and
downstream to the Yealm salmon beds????? The annual Yealm duck race will be called off due to health and
safety - all due to a supposedly environmentally friendly waste incineration company working in the area.

Hi Jean, I spoke to Howard Ellard from Viridor just recently who assured be that the striped area on the map right next to the river is not the proposed site of the landfill (they are not sure what they will put there yet, he mentioned a possible visitor centre, although that hasn't yet been decided). The landfill will go where the current quarry now is, just south of the proposed incinerator (the area is actually much larger than the striped area I know you are thinking of). If you can get a copy of their consultation booklet you will see an aerial artistic impression of the quarry on page 2 (I'll show you when I see you next). However, I would still question whether even that location is not too near to the river, especially when taking into consideration the nearby floodplains. Mr Ellard also said that it might be possible for us to visit the site to view for ourselves, so if anyone wants to go down there let me know and I'll see if I can organise that. (Howard, if you are reading, please feel free to join in and correct me if I have misrepresented anything you said). Thanks!

I had a further look at the Google map of the site and I realise that the river appears to be only 150 feet away from the proposed landfill. Very worrying.

It's not just the river. There is a stream across the site making pollution inevitable. Not only are there fish in the river, it is frequented by otters and other wildlife and drains into an estuary which is SSSI

It was recently also pointed out to me that the access road runs across a flood plain.
