Hi, I'm Not sure which part of the forum this should go exactly, but I'd like to pick up on a few points raised in the public meeting on the 21st.

* South Hams is the 2nd best area in the country at recycling, acheiving almost 60% of all waste.
* Other areas (such as Torbay / Plymouth) do not recycle as much.
* Someone pointed out that in Denmark, over 80% is acheived, however
Cllr Roger Croad pointed out that:
* getting to that 60% mark is (relatively) easy, and
* increasing this amount further becomes more difficult and costly.

Something I don't recall being mentioned is that part of the answer must come from the areas that do not recycle so much catching up with the South Hams in reaching 60%

I totally agree with this post. After two weeks my grey bin is very light and usually contains packaging that can't be put into the recycle. It wouldn't be a great step to drastically reduce this waste even more with the cooperation of the shops and supermarkets with food packaging. It should be made illegal to package items in non recyclable packaging. Job done!

My grey bin is light too. In it I think are practically only two things, plastics (yoghurt pots, cellophane wrappers and plastic trays) and also juice cartons. I heard that it should now be possible to recycle these also, since the technology does exist. If the council could find a solution for these remaining items, then just what will there be left to go in an incinerator?

I guess disposable nappies and other sanitary products, but did you see that nappy recycling plant they are setting up in West Bromwich, using autoclaving technology? http://www.mrw.co.uk/page.cfm/action=Archive/ArchiveID=10/EntryID=6025 Maybe we could have something like that? I hear that there is PFI funding available for such projects. Autoclaving is also being utilised in America and other countries to great effect that has enabled the closure of many hospital incinerators. http://www.noharm.org/all_regions/issues/waste/

I know we already compost our food waste in the brown bin, but anaerobic digestion could be better as we would then be able to benefit from the energy that could be extracted, and even waste from farms for example would be able to go into an anaerobic digestion facility.

After a short but determined spell of research we are coming up with some real workable solutions, but they do require effort. It seems that our council is driven by short term economics and were looking for a quick fix with minimum hassle. Our council wants to avoid paying penalties under the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme, but have not at all considered the long term costs of an incinerator. They should realise that an Incinerator will never be that easy option with minimum hassle that they were looking for, since for sure we will see to it that an incinerator becomes their biggest headache until they get the message and start to listen and work for us.

Interesting article on autoclaving technology on Wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waste_autoclave
Also interesting to see it being used successfully in Yorkshire and now in southern Ireland.

It is possible to recycle other plastic such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and food trays. You need to take them to the recycling centre
near the tennis courts.
After doing this there is very little left, just a few wrappers, so I only put residual waste out once every 2-3 months.

Thanks Janet, you know I didn't even know that! I guess there are many more like me too who didn't know that. Just shows how much our recycling efforts can be improved.

I only discovered recently that the Tetra packs (fruit smoothies etc) can also be recycled if you take them your self to the tip.
Unfortunately though this does mean storing all of these items somewhere and then single trips in the car to the tip.
Perhaps a roadside collection of these items would be a good idea?
Perhaps, it may be deemed not cost effective, but perhaps our council could lead the way in creating a clean and beautiful environment, as oppose to one filled with dioxins, but still achieving central government targets.

Ideally we should be able to recycle these items at the site where they came from - the supermarket. We are going to make a trip there anyay, so the car journey would not be an additional uneccesary one, and the supermarket may then be able to contribute to the cost of the recycling, seeing as it is them who created problem in the first place.

It is possible to recycle Tetra packs at Tesco as suggested by Anna, although the container is often full. Best to stand on packs to flatten them before posting into bin.
