Whilst I was at the demonstration I heard a gentleman from Plymouth Unions speak about the proposed incinerator at Devonport, and that it would go onto incinerate low level nuclear waste from the dismantling of nuclear submarines; spreading the fall out ash all over the city, over thousands of people.
Like the proposed incinerator, I was blissfully unaware that nuclear submarines were decommissioned at Devonport. I was also unaware that the Dockyard is licensed to discharge low level nuclear waste.
The Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) in 2006 that the waste from Britain's nuclear reactors should be dealt with through deep burial. But instead they were cut up at Devonport.
I can’t find information online, but apparently the waste is then transported to bury at nuclear dumps around the UK.
Now a proposed incinerator at Devonport means that low level radioactive waste will no longer need to be transported to dump on someone else’ doorstep such as Drigg in Cumbria, instead it can be burned here in Plymouth and the fall out impact will be noticed by all.
Should nuclear waste should be transported at all as it poses to great a risk to human health is it fair to dump it on someone else’s door step either, why should it go anywhere? Why was it created at all?
If it needs to go anywhere it should be buried deep underground, and no more ever created again. Or perhaps, it should go into the back yard of the people who created it? Was that our government? Or was it us, the people, for standing by and allowing our government to create it?
If we are going to create more and more nuclear waste, surely we need to find a solution we all agree on first? Before having dirty nuclear waste, that nobody wants to have on their doorstep.
I really don’t want nuclear waste to be burned anywhere ever. But just as landfill is running out, so is nuclear landfill.
The following accidents are just some of those that have occurred in recent years:
25/03/09 radioactive waste escaped HMS Turbulent at Devonport
11/08 280 litres radioactive waste went into River Tamar
10/05 another leak
05/08 two spillages, so severe that Environment Agency threatened legal action
A quote from Linda Gilroy MP - her website blog:
Devonport and the Incinerator Proposal
A number have people have asked me for my view on this. I have issued the following statement today,
"This is not a good idea. There is no direct relevance to the work that takes place in the dockyard or the naval base, all of which is highly skilled and complex. I struggle to see how an incinerator would bring worthwhile numbers of quality jobs to Devonport or support our existing economic sectors. However in common with other local residents I can see that it would almost certainly bring increased traffic and noise to what is a very already busy area. I think the proposed site at Lee Mill is the most suitable choice. There is more space and a lower population density, meaning it is well suited to cope with increased traffic. I will be working with councillors and local residents to advance this argument."
