WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP TO OBJECT TO VIRIDOR'S PLANS

Many people think that the fight for New England Quarry is over. However, despite Viridor not gaining the contract from the local Waste Partnership, the company is pressing ahead with plans for an incinerator at the site. But there were so many complaints and objections to its original plans that Viridor has had to submit revised plans.

The Council has now put these revised plans out to public consultation.  So now is your chance to have your say AGAIN.

WE HAVE UNTIL THE 11TH APRIL TO SUBMIT OBJECTIONS.

We want you to object on key issues in Viridor’s revised plans:

  • Viridor’s original justification for the incinerator and consultation with the community only concerned getting rid of South Devon's household waste. But now they don’t have the contract and don’t have any waste;
  • Because they don’t have the contract, Viridor will have to import commercial and industrial waste from outside Devon;
  • These new lorry movements have not been modelled;
  • Even without taking these new lorries into consideration, there will be a substantial increase in HGV traffic through Lee Mill and along the A38;
  • Viridor has not addressed concerns that incineration reduces recycling especially in relation to commercial waste;
  • The company has widened and lengthened the access road that encroaches further into ancient woodland;
  • The plans to drain the site will destroy foraging sites for nine species of bat;
  • The NEQ site to the river Yealm provides a wildlife corridor for otters and many threatened birds, and this could be at risk;
  • Incineration creates so much waste such as bottom ash which still needs to be land-filled;
  • Viridor has not fully investigated other technologies to deal with waste such as mechanical biological treatment or anaerobic digestion;

There are two ways to see the planning information:

  • The Internet - The amended documentation received is available in electronic form at: www.devon.gov.uk/planpage_3_3650. The application reference is : DCC/2975/2010
  • Hard copy  - at the Watermark Centre, Ivybridge.

Objections can be submitted by

  • Email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • Post to Mrs S Penaluna, Planning Officer, Devon County Council, ABG Lucombe House, County Hall, Exeter, EX2 4QW

Responding to planning applications is daunting but hopefully these key issues will help.

It is important to remember all previous objections still stand but only objections to the revised plans should be commented on this time. Even if you complained last time, please submit an objection again. Every objection submitted could help us stop this scheme and get a sustainable solution to our waste instead.

Best of luck,

Charlotte
