This article disucsses a number of mercury 'hotspots' in North America. The article states 'Although mercury is not directly harmful at ambient levels, it is concentrated up to a millionfold and chemically modified in aquatic food chains, resulting in dangerous levels of methylmercury in some wildlife species,' and that municipal waste incinerators are major sources of mercury pollution.

This article estiamtes 'that 5–7% of lung cancers in European never smokers and ex-smokers are attributable to high levels of air pollution, as expressed by NO2 or proximity to heavy traffic roads.' It explains that 'NO2 is the expression of a mixture of combustion (traffic-related) particles and gases, and is also related to power plants and waste incinerator emissions.'

In Portugal, biomonitoring projects on heavy metals are being carried out on people living in the vicinity of solid waste incinerators. This research abstract states 'Compared with published reference values for similar conditions, blood levels of cadmium, lead, and mercury of the present investigation seem to be relatively higher, in median terms and for extreme values, mainly in the case of cadmium and mercury.'
